Today was maybe the most “Spring-like” day we’ve had since the season officially began. (Never mind all the Bays currently packed with ice and the absolute madness that is the amount of snow that fell out in Central NL recently and the fact most of the province probably looks like an ice planet.) One could dart from the house to the shed without a jacket … Continue reading Thrifted Thursdays: 04.06.17
The draft of this post is being brought to you by my current in-flight indecision on whether I want to watch “Arrival” or “Lion”. This flight from Vancouver to Montréal is around five hours long, so I could probably watch both, now that I think about it. We’re down to the short flights. YVR to YUL. YUL to home. The worst of it is done: … Continue reading Thrifted Thursdays: 02.23.17
So we recently spent a couple days down in Hobart, Tasmania. We were 18,000 km away from home in Newfoundland & Labrador. (How much further can one actually get on the globe? Geography experts–let us know, haha). When walking off the plane in Hobart, we immediately noticed the temperature change. The fleece leggings were back on! We were froze in the early mornings going around … Continue reading Thrifted Thursdays: 02.16.17
Can you remember the moment you discovered there’s more in the world than you thought? I can’t tell you exactly how old I was, but I distinctly remember seeing the Sydney Opera House on tv when I was little–an episode of Sesame Street maybe?–and realizing that it was “elsewhere”. Of all the pictures I’ve seen and descriptions I’ve read about foreign cities and countries, Sydney … Continue reading Sydney Harbour Views
Leave it to us to land in Sydney during a heat wave. It’s not much use complaining, we did come to Australia in the MIDDLE OF SUMMER. On purpose, at that. We would also feel bad complaining since facebook makes us well aware of the snowfall slash freezing cold situation back home. So. This was a fairly simple Thrifted Thursday, since most of what’s in … Continue reading Thrifted Thursdays: 02.09.17
After 46 hours of travel (28 of those hours spent in the air), we landed in St. John’s last night. This morning, it took me ten seconds to realize where I was. Another five seconds to figure out why I let myself sleep until noon. The backpack(s) have been unpacked and are taking a well-deserved break in my closet. My clothes are in the laundry … Continue reading Warning: The Travel Bug may have Side Effects.
We felt bad for Adelaide. We had just come from Sydney–and that’s a tough act to follow, haha. We had three days in Adelaide, so we wanted to make the most of them. I think we did pretty good. This will be my rant about the heat, haha. It reached 38° every day we were there. Being from Newfoundland, we’re used to the wind making … Continue reading Escaping the Adelaide Heat.
Our NYE in Sydney was something straight out of a movie. (Thank-you, Adam and Matt, for inviting us to the house party). (Not that either of them will read this). I wish I had snapped a picture of the house. And the pool. And the poolhouse. It sort of looked like the White House, only a little smaller. And minus Barack and Michelle. It was … Continue reading New Year’s Eve in Sydney.
You don’t really realize JUST how far Newfoundland and Australia are from each other until you actually go there. For instance, we left home on December 25th and landed in Sydney on December 28th. Travel was a 3.5 hour flight followed by an hour flight followed by a 15 hour flight topped off with a 10 hour flight. I was never so relieved to get … Continue reading Australia is far.
This is by no means a complaint–I absolutely LOVE traveling with just a single backpack. (Remind me to write a post on how problematic a suitcase would have been getting to our accommodations in Cinque Terre). My biggest struggle when packing my backpack revolves around footwear. You basically only get to bring a single pair of shoes. That’s it. ONE pair. I usually have room … Continue reading Backpacking & Footwear Problems.
